Knight Receives RAPG from ASC by John Ashley Knight

J. Ashley Knight has received a 2019 Regional Artist Project Grant from the Arts & Sciences Council in Charlotte, NC. With the Grant funds, Knight has purchased the latest technology in virtual reality, the HTC Vive Pro to advance his artistic practice. “Using this new technological tool, I can now immerse myself in a virtual reality environment and draw, paint, and sculpt three dimensionally in the “air.” My specific interest in this tool is using the Tiltbrush application that allows me to quickly create and work out ideas in 3D in a fraction of the time as a physical model or flat drawing.” Knight’s recent sculptural work includes commissioned pieces for Pfeiffer University and the AC Hotel in Center City Charlotte. “My process includes creating larger sculptures out of many smaller symbolic pieces, sometimes using them in repetiition to create a dynamic moving composition. The Vive Pro will allow me to quickly work out ideas and view them from every angle possible within constructed environments that represent a specific geographical site. I am very grateful for being selected as a 2019 Grant Recipient. Thank you very much to the Regional Artist Project consortium, the Arts & Sciences Council of Charlotte, and the N.C. Arts Council, for this opportunity to advance my work and process!”

This project was made possible through the support of the North Carolina Arts Council, a state agency, the Blumenthal Endowment, and the arts councils in Cabarrus, Cleveland, Gaston, Iredell, Mecklenburg, Rowan, Rutherford, Stanly, Union, and York (SC) counties.

This project was supported by the N.C. Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural & Cultural Resources. www.NCArts.org.
